Daniel Beddingfield, as many dedicated cavers will know, is an inspiration to the caving world. A keen troglodyte himself his main musical contribution to speleological pursuit exists in the form of that well know caving anthem' 'Gotta Get Thru This". Local legend has it that the lyrics came to him during a Priddy Green Sink to Swildons trip. At one point he thought he was stuck but sang to himself, "I gotta get through this, I gotta get through this, I gotta get, gotta get, gotta get through oooooo" and he did! After a few tweaks to the lyrics at the request of his record company this song later went on to become a country-wide number one hit. We have recently unearthed the first draft of these lyrics which we reprint below for posterity.

From his soaring vocal gymastics to its fine appreciation of the physical anguish experienced by cavers in tight spaces, we can but doff our helments towards him. Sir, we salute you.

The Original“Gotta Get Thru This" Lyrics in Full:

If only I could get through this
I get through this
I gotta get through this
I gotta get through this
I gotta make it, gonna make, gonna make it through
I'm gotta get through this
I gotta get through this
I gotta take my, gotta take my tackle through
Give me an oversuit with a few less rips
Surely one more moment could just break my hips
Give me 'til tomorrow then I'll be okay
Just another day and then I'll be all right... HRRRGGHH!

When the chest is searing with the pain
I lose my boots and strip off again
When will I get the chance to get out of here
I think I may have just broke my spine
I feel my poor nuts breaking every time
I look into the hole....NNNRRGGGHHH!

If only I could get through this
If only I could get through this
If only I could get through this
God, God gotta help me get through this
I gotta get through this
I gotta get through this
If only I could get through this... WUUURGHH!

(Repeat until resurfacing)
